Identify 1-2 implicit biases you have about Black people.

 

  • Where and how are these biases reinforced by mainstream media?
  • Science tells us that we can change these associations, what action must you take to actively and consistently deconstruct these biases?

Begin by holding all ten of your fingers up. Put one finger down if you have experience any of the following:

 

  • Been called a racial slur
  • Been followed in a store unnecessarily
  • Someone has crossed the street to avoid passing you
  • Had someone clench their purse while in an elevator with you
  • Had someone step off an elevator to keep from riding with you
  • Been accused of not being to afford something expensive

How are you working to be a co-conspirator in your context?

 

 

  • What are you doing in your classroom, building, or district/organization to spend your privilege and dismantle the existing systems of racism?

What is the difference between being “not racist” and antiracist?

 

  • What does anti-racism feel, look, sound like?
  • How are you showing up as an antiracist in today’s social and political context?
  • Are you uncomfortable? Why or why not? Sit with this discomfort.

What happens when white people and non-Black people of color choose comfort over accurately describing the disparate economical, educational, political, and social outcomes for Black Americans

 

  • How do you think your students feel if/when you refuse to name such an important part of their identity?
  • If you don’t serve Black students, how does not speaking truth to Black experiences harm the students you do serve?
